Minister attends Climate Summit meetings

December 2009

Minister of Environment, Elaine Taylor attended the recent Climate Summit meeting in Copenhagen.

The Yukon delegation also attended an event hosted by the Arctic Athabaskan Council, which featured presentations by aboriginal hunters and elders as well as scientists focusing on caribou, climate change, community resilience and adaptation.

Finance Ministers meet in Whitehorse

Friday, December 18, 2009

The Minister of Finance, Jim Flaherty, is meeting with provincial and territorial finance ministers and treasurers in Whitehorse today, including Yukon's premier and Finance Minister, Dennis Fentie.

Ministers are reviewing progress on implementing Canada’s Economic Action Plan, discussing priorities for the economic recovery and beyond, and receiving and discussing the Report of the Research Working Group on Retirement Income Adequacy.


Children's Receiving Home under construction

The Children’s Receiving Home is a temporary home for children and youth who have been removed from their families because of abuse or neglect, and who need a period of assessment and stabilization.

The new downtown Whitehorse facility will be 4,200 square feet. The $799,000 federal contribution to the project comes through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the government’s plan to stimulate the economy and create jobs during the global recession.

Olympic Flame comes to Yukon

November 4, 2009


Government of Yukon photo: Premier Dennis Fentie greeted the Oympic Flame and torchbearer William Callaghan when it stopped at the Legislative Assembly on its way through Whitehorse.

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games Torch Relay stopped in Whitehorse, Old Crow and Dawson City on November 3-4 before continuing across the country.

The Yukon government was proud to support community celebrations throghout Yukon. Read the news release.

Congratulating Yukon's gold medalist

The 16-year-old Whitehorse swimmer became the Yukon’s first ever gold medalist at this summer’s Canada Games with a victory in the 400 m freestyle in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. 


Raising awareness about climate change

Minister of Environment Elaine Taylor, centre, joined more than 350 people to "Hug the Legislature." The event was organized by Bringing Youth Towards Equality (BYTE) and a dedicated community planning committee to raise awareness on Climate Change.

Minister Taylor will attend the upcoming United Nations Climate Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark this December 2009.

Getting ready for the Olympic Torch

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch will be in Yukon November 3-4, 2009. People in Whitehorse began gearing up for the Torch events with a community celebration last week.

Construction begins on housing project

Northern leaders from across the world are meeting in Whitehorse for the 2009 General Assembly of the Northern Forum, September 1-3.

The Northern Forum is an international organization of sub-national or regional governments from eight northern countries.

Prime Minister visits Mayo B site
