Minister greets Yukon's Olympic contingent

Minister of Tourism and Culture Elaine Taylor and CEO of the Yukon Arts Centre Al Cushing met with some members of Yukon's cultural contingent before the group heads down to represent Yukon at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

First Nation governance conference in Whitehorse

Northern House opens in Vancouver

Canada’s Northern House is now officially open in downtown Vancouver. Read the news release .

The house is a key feature of the plan to promote the three Northern territories at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games, it will be the source for information about living, visiting and investing in the territories and a showcase for Northern arts and culture. Fulda Challenge 2010 begins

Ten teams from Germany, Austria and Yukon/Canada are currently competing in the 2010 Fulda Challenge Extreme Arctic Winter Adventure. Teams will test their skill, strength and endurance levels while competing for pure Yukon Gold.

By supporting this unique, winter event, Yukon helps raise awareness of the territory in Europe as a winter destination.

Minister attends Climate Summit meetings

December 2009

Minister of Environment, Elaine Taylor attended the recent Climate Summit meeting in Copenhagen.

The Yukon delegation also attended an event hosted by the Arctic Athabaskan Council, which featured presentations by aboriginal hunters and elders as well as scientists focusing on caribou, climate change, community resilience and adaptation.

Finance Ministers meet in Whitehorse

The Minister of Finance, Jim Flaherty, is meeting with provincial and territorial finance ministers and treasurers in Whitehorse today, including Yukon's premier and Finance Minister, Dennis Fentie.

Ministers are reviewing progress on implementing Canada’s Economic Action Plan, discussing priorities for the economic recovery and beyond, and receiving and discussing the Report of the Research Working Group on Retirement Income Adequacy.


Children's Receiving Home under construction

November 10, 2009


Yukon government photo: Senator Daniel Lang and Minister of Health and Social Services Glenn Hart launch the construction of the new Children's Receiving Home.

The Children’s Receiving Home is a temporary home for children and youth who have been removed from their families because of abuse or neglect, and who need a period of assessment and stabilization.

The new downtown Whitehorse facility will be 4,200 square feet. The $799,000 federal contribution to the project comes through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the government’s plan to stimulate the economy and create jobs during the global recession.

Olympic Flame comes to Yukon

November 4, 2009


Government of Yukon photo: Premier Dennis Fentie greeted the Oympic Flame and torchbearer William Callaghan when it stopped at the Legislative Assembly on its way through Whitehorse.

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games Torch Relay stopped in Whitehorse, Old Crow and Dawson City on November 3-4 before continuing across the country.

Congratulating Yukon's gold medalist

The 16-year-old Whitehorse swimmer became the Yukon’s first ever gold medalist at this summer’s Canada Games with a victory in the 400 m freestyle in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. 


Raising awareness about climate change

Minister of Environment Elaine Taylor, centre, joined more than 350 people to "Hug the Legislature." The event was organized by Bringing Youth Towards Equality (BYTE) and a dedicated community planning committee to raise awareness on Climate Change.

Minister Taylor will attend the upcoming United Nations Climate Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark this December 2009.
