À propos de la Stratégie pour le Nord

Premier Dennis FentieThe release of Canada’s Northern Strategy provides a welcome focus on the North by the federal government. We are encouraged by Ottawa’s continued commitment to work in partnership to build a strong and secure North, responding to the needs of northerners, and for the benefit of all Canadians.

The Northern Strategy recognizes that northern residents and communities must be the primary beneficiaries of northern development, that we have a say in the decisions affecting us, and that development is undertaken in a social and environmentally sustainable manner.

It reinforces and supports the importance of the North to Canada’s security and sovereignty and recognizes that the North is a vital part of our national identity. It articulates a vision of Canada that stretches from coast to coast to coast; one that looks for “made in the North” solutions to northern issues. The Northern Strategy articulates a vision of healthy sustainable communities and pan-northern, international cooperation.

The Northern Strategy commits to improving and devolving northern governance and recognizes the political maturity and new certainty in the North created by devolution. The announcement clears the way to negotiate new arrangements between First Nations and Ottawa. The next step is to finalize the implementation mandate for our treaties here in Yukon and to develop a new financial transfer agreement with self-governing First Nations. Having a clearly defined statement of the federal government’s northern policies will only help the North.

I look forward to opportunities to discuss this strategy with my colleagues at our Northern Premiers’ Forum in September.
